Railings and Balustrades Singapore

Railings and balustrades for Singapore — stainless steel handrails, mild steel railings and glass balustrades for balconies, staircases and walkways, with material selection for indoor, outdoor and coastal exposure.

Stainless Steel Railings, Mild Steel Handrails and Glass Balustrades

Three families cover most railing scopes:

  • Stainless steel railings — SS304 (1.4301) for indoor and most outdoor; SS316 (1.4404) for coastal/marine. Round tube ø42.4mm × 2.0–2.6mm wall is the common section for top rails.
  • Mild steel handrails — galvanised S275JR pipe with topcoat. Lower cost, heavier, recoat every 5–8 years in industrial exposure.
  • Glass balustrades — laminated tempered glass infill (typically 12.76mm) clamped or channelled, with or without a top handrail.

Balcony, Staircase and Walkway Railing Applications

Typical applications:

  • Condo / landed balcony balustrades — usually 1100mm height, glass infill or stainless rod / horizontal rails.
  • Internal staircase handrails — SS304 round tube or timber-clad MS bracket sets.
  • Roof and walkway handrails — galvanised mild steel or SS304 depending on exposure.
  • Industrial mezzanine and platform handrails — galvanised MS, with toe-board where required.

Material Selection for Indoor, Outdoor and Coastal Exposure

Singapore’s exposure ranges from sheltered indoor (C1–C2) to coastal salt-air (C5). The right material depends on it:

ExposureIndicative direction
Indoor / sheltered (C1–C2)Galvanised MS or SS304
Outdoor inland (C3)SS304, or galv MS with topcoat (recoat 5–8 yrs)
Outdoor industrial / urban (C4)SS304 strongly preferred; galv MS needs topcoat program
Coastal / marine (C5)SS316 (1.4404)

Load, Height and Fixing Checks by Project Requirement

Common reference points for design verification by the QP/PE:

  • Workplace Safety and Health (Work at Height) Regulations — guard-rail strength expectation around 0.74 kN/m horizontal.
  • Top rail height typically 1100mm for industrial walkways and balconies; 900mm for residential staircases.
  • Fixing into RC slab vs AAC vs masonry changes anchor sizing — see our wall anchor guide.

Final loads, heights and fixings should be checked against project requirements by the relevant QP, PE, consultant, supplier or authority where required.
